Soft Power in Motion
Tinubu Awards Bill Gates Nigeria’s CFR National Honour and according to Sahara Reporters, the move was made during Gates’ recent visit to Nigeria, a visit tied to his foundation’s continued investments in health, agriculture, and education in Africa. The President, who conferred the national honour of the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Bill Gates, sparked a wave of mixed reactions across social media.
But beyond the surface of that recognition lies a deeper political tactic—one that taps into soft power and emotional intelligence, not necessarily to solve pressing domestic issues, but to shape perception and win hearts where policy might be failing.
In ours previous blog post titled Emotional Intelligence : The Irreplaceable Soft Skill In The Age Of AI ,we talked about how irreplaceable emotional intelligence is especially our age .
When Leadership Uses Recognition as Strategy
Honouring international figures isn’t new. It’s a diplomatic play often used by governments to signal alignment, strengthen alliances, or redirect public discourse. In this case, some interpret it as a diversion—a move aimed at building global goodwill while discontent brews locally. Others see it as an attempt to leverage Bill Gates’ influence to paint a progressive image on the world stage.
But regardless of intent, one thing is clear: emotional intelligence—specifically self-awareness, empathy, and social influence—is at the core of this move.
What It Teaches Emerging Professionals
Whether in politics or the workplace, emotionally intelligent individuals understand the power of timing, relationships, and optics. They know when to speak, when to align, and when to let gestures speak louder than actions.
As young professionals, learning to read the room, manage perceptions, and lead with insight is a critical skill. Emotional intelligence isn’t about being manipulative; it’s about navigating human complexity with awareness.
